Community

As a club, we very much enjoy participating in our local community and for the last thirty-one years, in conjunction with the Lions Club of Richmond, we have helped to organize and run the annual Waimea Primary and Intermediate Schools Speech Contest.Another annual event is our Young Leaders Seminar for senior school/college students which is held at Waimea College.

These events and courses are aimed at helping our youth to become confident leaders at an early age.

The Young Leaders Seminar takes place over four weeks, usually in August, and is proving so popular that in order to accept all students wishing to participate, we are now holding two seminars running on two nights during the week.

Although most of the presentations on the various topics are made by our more experienced members, newer members are encouraged to participate by giving the ‘Inspiration’ or leading the impromptu speaking sessions, for example.

Some of the topics covered by our Young Leaders Seminar include:

  • Speech Construction
  • Controlling Nervousness
  • Platform Presence
  • Voice Effectiveness
  • Impromptu Speaking
  • Visualization
  • Writing a Speech
  • Presenting a Speech

Throughout the course students have an opportunity to put into practice what they have learned. At the end of the seminar, all students present a prepared speech and each receives an individual evaluation thereon and Certificate of Participation

Primary and Intermediate Schools Speech Contest: has been run by Powertalk Nelson-Waimea in conjuction with the Lions Club of Richmond for the past 31 years.

It is always a pleasure to see just how enthusiastic and professional our young students are. The standard of contestants and entries is always extremely high and although there can be only one official winner, they are all winners.
